침묵의 댓가 : 독일 구두방 할아버지의 이야기

In Germany, the Nazis first came…
독일에 처음 나치가 등장했을 때......

They came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
처음에 그들은 유태인들을 잡아갔습니다.
그러나 나는 침묵했습니다.
왜냐하면 나는 유태인이 아니었기 때문입니다.

Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
그 다음에 그들은 공산주의자들을 잡아갔습니다.
그러나 나는 침묵하였습니다.
왜냐하면 나는 공산주의자가 아니었기 때문이지요.

Then they came for the socialist
and I did not speak out -
because I was not a socialist.
그 다음엔 사회주의자들을 잡아갔습니다.
그때도 나는 침묵하였습니다.
왜냐하면 나는 사회주의자가가 아니었기 때문입니다.

Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
그리고 그 다음엔 노동운동가들을 잡아갔습니다.
나는 이때도 역시 침묵하였습니다.
왜냐하면 나는 노동운동가가 아니었기 때문입니다.

Then they came for the Catholics and Protestants,
and I did not speak out
because I was a Catholics and Protestant.
그리고 이제는 카톨릭 교도들과 기독교인들을 잡아갔습니다.
그러나 나는 침묵하였습니다.
왜냐하면 나는 기독교인이 아니었기 때문입니다.

Then they came for my neighbours
and I did not speak out
because I don't know my neighbours wrong.
그리고 어느 날부터 내 이웃들이 잡혀가기 시작했습니다.
그러나 나는 침묵하였습니다.
왜냐하면 나는 그들이 잡혀가는 것은 뭔가 죄가 있기 때문이라고 생각했기 때문입니다.

Then they came for my friends
and I did not speak out
because I only love my family.
그러던 어느 날은 내 친구들이 잡혀갔습니다.
그러나 그때도 나는 침묵하였습니다.
왜냐하면 나는 내 가족들이 더 소중했기 때문입니다.

Then they came for me
but there was no one left
to speak out for me.
그러던 어느 날 그들은 나를 잡으러 왔습니다.
하지만 이미 내 주위에는 나를 위해
이야기해 줄 사람이 아무도 남아 있지 않았습니다.
